State Vehicle Inspections

How It Works

What Texas Emissions Testing Requires Now

Texas changed its inspection rules on January 1, 2025. Under House Bill 3297, most non-commercial vehicles no longer need an annual safety inspection to be registered. But if your vehicle is registered in Harris or Montgomery County, as most Tomball-area vehicles are, you still need a passing emissions inspection before you can renew your registration. Gas-powered vehicles between 2 and 24 years old are generally required to be tested, while fully electric vehicles are exempt. Commercial vehicles still need an annual safety inspection in every county.

Getting your state inspection done at our shop is simple. Schedule online, drop off your vehicle, and we'll text you when it's finished. If your vehicle passes, you're ready to renew. If it doesn't, we'll explain exactly what failed, what repair would fix it, and what it will cost, with no pressure to approve anything on the spot.

Because every vehicle also receives a complimentary multi-point inspection, we can point out safety concerns the emissions test doesn't cover, like worn brakes or tires.

What to Know

Failed Your Emissions Test? Here's How We Get You Passing

A failed emissions inspection usually comes down to a problem your vehicle's onboard computer has already detected. Common causes include:

• An illuminated check engine light
• A failing oxygen sensor or catalytic converter
• Evaporative emissions (EVAP) leaks, including a loose or worn gas cap
• Misfires from worn spark plugs or ignition coils
• Vacuum leaks or EGR valve problems

The same ASE-certified technicians who run your inspection can diagnose and repair whatever it turns up, so you don't have to take your vehicle anywhere else. Repairs are backed by our 36-month/36,000-mile nationwide warranty. Our digital inspection reports are yours to keep and review at your own pace, which makes it easy to share them with anyone else who helps make decisions about the vehicle. If you need to leave while we work, ask about a courtesy loaner or our shuttle. We serve drivers across Tomball, Magnolia, and Cypress on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., so getting your registration sticker doesn't have to take over your week.
