Your timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning in perfect sync. When it stretches, cracks, or loses a tooth, the results range from rough running to a sudden breakdown. In many engines, known as interference engines, a broken timing belt lets the pistons strike the valves, causing serious internal damage that costs far more than the belt itself.

The tricky part is that timing belts often give little warning before they fail. That's why manufacturers set a replacement interval, typically somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles depending on the engine.
